Conflict Resolution – Gangs are recruiting our youths at record numbers because of absentee parents, specifically fathers. Teens are joining these groups because they are seeking a sense of belonging and acceptance. Through one on one sessions focusing on consistency, we will teach youths how to overcome these negative influences and options for resolving conflicts other than physical violence and the use of firearms.
Social Skill Building – The world has become so dependent on electronic gadgets to communicate, we are losing our basic ability to build relationships. Social media is playing a large part in teens opting to by-pass conversation choosing instead to send a text message riddled with misspelled words and abbreviations. The lack of natural face to face interaction and talking to each other causes misunderstanding and conflict. With this service, we focus on communication skills, interaction and relationship building.
Mentoring at Risk Children – A sense of guidance is missing in many communities today. We are built with a compass inside of us and if not maintained by those responsible for the welfare of children, the children can easily be led down a path of unproductivity. Poverty stricken, less fortunate and disenfranchised families with teenagers are often affected. At Gentia BHS, our mentors use love and consistency to change the compass dial and redirect the at risk child with the help of every resource available to us. This is one way that we make a difference.
Tutoring Sessions – Contributing to a failing society is the lack of students graduating from high school and enrolling in and completing higher education. Their inability to understand the classwork creates low self esteem that may not be understood by teachers and parents. With tutoring in areas of reading, writing and mathematics, we hope to build the child’s self esteem and repair the disconnect between student, teacher and parent.
